Farrier Residence, Almonte, Ontario

Completed in 2001, this 3200sf 3 bedroom house is set well back from the road on a wooded site just west of Almonte. To avoid excavation and extensive removal of rock, the house is built on an 8″ floating reinforced structural slab over an engineered granular base. A radiant floor heating system, integral with the structural slab, is by Legalett Inc. of Brockville, ON, (www.legalett.com) and consists of a series of closed loops of 4″dia. air ducts embedded in the slab each of which is supplied with heated air from one of two fan coil units. The fan coils (recessed at floor level) are supplied in turn by an oil fired boiler. While all main living areas are on one level, a double height interior volume arches over an elevated central loft supported on an eastern white pine post & beam structure. Second level ancillary areas off the loft include a Sewing Room and Games Room. The exposed concrete floor is an amber coloured acid etch surrounded by a combination of maple and cherry flooring on the staircase and second level. A large stone clad wood burning fireplace is a main feature of the home expressed simultaneously as both an interior and exterior element by means of large 1 ½ storey windows on either side of the 36 foot high chimney. The family dining room is flanked on two sides by identically sized screened porches resulting in ample cross ventilation and outdoor access. Deep rust coloured wood siding is accented by areas of exposed heavy timber and limestone with taupe aluminum clad windows and metal roof.
